The artists of Eurovision 2017: Hovig – “Gravity” (Cyprus)

Persistence pays off, as this year's Cypriot entry has discovered.

When assessing the Cypriot entry this year, the comparisons to Rag'n'Bone Man’s “Human” are inescapable - nearly every Eurovision fan forum has a reference to the two songs. There are echoes of it throughout Hovig’s "Gravity", but this song is an entirely different beast.

Third time's the charm for young Hovig Demirjian, Cypriot born of Armenian descent, as he unsuccessfully attempted to qualify and represent Cyrpus in 2010 and 2015. Local broadcaster CyBC internally selected Hovig for this year’s contest and went to work organising a collaboration with Swedish songwriter Thomas G:son (he of “Euphoria” fame).

Hovig promises to deliver a spectacle on stage, which will be necessary if he hopes to qualify to the grand final and not fall back to Earth with a thud.
