There’s much excitement around Belgium’s clean synth-pop entry this year and for good reason. Blanche’s “City Lights” may scream “theme song for a teen angst 13-part thriller on Netflix”, but the song's simple nature is an instant earworm (I dare you to stop humming “all alone in the danger zone”).
Blanche (aka Ellie Delvaux), like so many other Eurovision contestants, came to prominence in her homeland as a contestant in her local version of The Voice, where her thick, husky vocals made her stand out from many of her competitors.
Belgium opted for an internal selection this year instead of a televised contest and this junior chanteuse secured the glittery ticket. Amassing over 1.6 million views on YouTube, there’s major momentum behind this entry - so much so that the “City Lights” we may be seeing in 2018 could be in Brussels.
