· France won two of their previous three World Cup finals: 3-0 versus Brazil in 1998 (as hosts) and 4-2 versus Croatia in 2018. They were defeated by Italy in a penalty shootout in 2006 (5-3, 1-1 after 120 minutes).

· France are one step away from becoming the third team to win consecutive World Cups, after Italy (1934, 1938) and Brazil (1958, 1962). Argentina (1990) and Brazil (1998) came runners-up after they had won the previous World Cup.

· France are the first team to reach successive World Cup finals since Brazil (1994, 1998, 2002). They are the first European team to achieve this since West Germany (1982, 1986, 1990).

· France's eight goals in World Cup finals were netted by Zinédine Zidane (2 in 1998, 1 in 2006), Emmanuel Petit (1998), Mario Mandzukic (own goal, 2018), Antoine Griezmann (2018, penalty), Paul Pogba (2018) and Kylian Mbappé (2018).

· France won 11 of their 13 World Cup matches since the start of the 2018 tournament (W11-D1-L1). Les Bleus failed to win their final group stage match in 2018 (0-0 against Denmark) and 2022 (1-0 loss to Tunisia).

· France have not failed to win a World Cup game in which they took the lead since the 2006 final versus Italy.

· France lifted the trophy in seven of their nine finals of major tournaments (excluding 1985 Finalissima). The exceptions were the 2006 World Cup (lost on penalties versus Italy) and EURO 2016 (1-0 loss to Portugal after extra time as hosts).

· France won their only major final since the 2018 World Cup: 2-1 versus Spain in the final of the 2020/21 Nations League in Milan on 10 October 2021. Karim Benzema (66') and Kylian Mbappé (80') erased Mikel Oyarzabal's opening goal (64').

· France won two of their four World Cup penalty shootouts: in the 1986 quarter-finals against Brazil and 1998 quarter-finals against Italy. Les Bleus lost their shootouts in the 1982 semi-finals versus West Germany and in the 2006 final versus Italy.

· France's David Trezeguet (hit the bar) was the only player to miss in the shootout in the final in 2006.

Argentina Stats
· Argentina have reached their sixth World Cup final. Argentina went on to win the trophy in 1978 (as hosts) and 1986, and were runners-up in 1930, 1990 and 2014.

· Argentina won two of their five World Cup finals: 3-1 after extra time versus Netherlands in 1978 and 3-2 versus West Germany in 1986. They were beaten 4-2 by Uruguay in 1930, 1-0 by West Germany in 1990 and 1-0 after extra time by Germany in 2014.

· Only (West) Germany (8), Brazil (6) and Italy (6) progressed to as many World Cup finals as Argentina (6, including 2022). Note: Brazil also won the 1950 World Cup that had no final (the final round was a four-team group).

· Argentina (3) are one of three teams to have finished runners-up on more than two occasions at the World Cup, alongside (West) Germany (4) and Netherlands (3).

· Argentina can become the first CONMEBOL nation to win the World Cup since Brazil in 2002. Brazil beat Germany 2-0 in that final.

· Argentina can become the third team to lift the World Cup trophy by beating the defending champions in the final, after West Germany in 1990 and France in 1998.

· Argentina can become the second team to win the World Cup title despite losing their opening game, after Spain in 2010. La Albiceleste suffered a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia at Lusail Stadium in their opener in this tournament.

· Argentina's eight goals in World Cup finals were netted by Carlos Peucelle (1930), Guillermo Stábile (1930), Mario Kempes (2, 1978), Ricardo Daniel Bertoni (1978), José Luis Brown (1986), Jorge Valdano (1986) and Jorge Luis Burruchaga (1986).

· Argentina did not have a single shot on target in the 120 minutes of their most recent World Cup final (against Germany in 2014). They had 10 shot attempts (nine wide, one blocked).

· Argentina won only one of their last eight finals of major tournaments (excluding 2022 Finalissima): 1-0 against Brazil in the 2021 Copa América final at Maracanã (goal by Ángel Di María). This victory ended a seven-match winless streak for La Albiceleste in major tournament finals (they lost three of those seven finals on penalties).

· Argentina lost all three of their major tournament finals that were decided by a penalty shootout: the 2004 Copa América (against Brazil), the 2015 Copa América (against Chile) and the 2016 Copa América (against Chile). Lionel Messi scored his penalty in the 2015 shootout, but missed in 2016. Messi announced his retirement from international football after that shootout defeat to Chile in 2016 but reversed that decision 47 days later.

· Argentina (6) have been involved in the most penalty shootouts and have claimed the most shootout victories (5) in World Cup history. Argentina only lost on penalties to hosts Germany in the 2006 quarter-finals. Lionel Messi and Lionel Scaloni were unused substitutes in that game against Germany.

Head-to-Head: Argentina v France

· Argentina and France have met 12 times in all competitions. The balance is W6-D3-L3 in Argentina's favour.

· These nations have met three times before at the World Cup. Argentina won both World Cup group stage matches versus France (1-0 in 1930, 2-1 in 1978), but the only World Cup knockout phase meeting was a 4-3 victory for Les Bleus in the round of last 16 in 2018. They have not faced each other since that game in 2018.

· Antoine Griezmann (13', penalty), Benjamin Pavard (57') and Kylian Mbappé (64', 68') netted for Didier Deschamps' France in Kazan in 2018. Ángel Di María (41'), Gabriel Mercado (48', assist Lionel Messi) and Sergio Agüero (90+2', assist Messi) scored for Argentina.

· Argentina's most recent victory over France was a 2-0 win in a friendly in Marseille on 11 February 2009, courtesy of goals by Jonás Gutiérrez (41') and Lionel Messi (83').

· France failed to score in eight of their previous 12 international fixtures against Argentina. The South Americans did not find the net in four of those 12 encounters.

· France are unbeaten in their last 10 World Cup matches against South American opposition (W6-D4-L0, matches decided on penalties are classed as a draw) since that 2-1 group stage defeat to hosts Argentina in 1978.

· France came out on top in their last six World Cup knockout stage matches against South American teams, after losing their first World Cup knockout stage match versus a South American team: 5-2 to Brazil in the 1958 semi-finals.

· Argentina failed to win any of their previous three World Cup matches against the reigning world champions: 3-1 loss to West Germany in 1958 (group stage), 2-1 loss to Brazil in 1974 (second group phase) and a 1-1 draw to Italy in 1986 (group stage).

· The four players to score more than three goals at the 2022 World Cup may all feature in the final: Lionel Messi (5), Kylian Mbappé (5), Julián Álvarez (4) and Olivier Giroud (4). Note: this excludes the third-place play-off match.

· Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé (Paris Saint-Germain), Ángel Correa/Rodrigo De Paul/Nahuel Molina and Antoine Griezmann (Atlético Madrid), Ángel Di María/Leandro Paredes and Adrien Rabiot (Juventus), Lisandro Martínez and Raphaël Varane (Manchester United), and Cristian Romero and Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur) are all club teammates who could be in opposition in this final.

· Mbappé and Messi have played three competitive matches against each other for club or country. Eight of the 14 goals scored in those three games were either netted by Mbappé (6) or Messi (2).

· Mbappé and Messi first met in the 2018 World Cup round of last 16. Mbappé scored twice in France's 4-3 victory.

· Mbappé and Messi most recently were opponents in the 2020/21 Champions League round of last 16 between Paris Saint-Germain and FC Barcelona (5-2 on aggregate). Mbappé scored four goals in that two-legged tie, including three in the first leg in Barcelona. Messi scored once in both games.

2022 FIFA World Cup Final
· Argentina and France will contest the final of the 22nd World Cup. This will be the 21st final of the World Cup as there was no final in 1950 (the final round was a four-team group).

· Argentina will play their sixth World Cup final (1930, 1978, 1986, 1990, 2014, 2022). For France, it will be their fourth World Cup final (1998, 2006 2018, 2022).

· This is the first World Cup final between Argentina and France.

· There have been 10 World Cup finals between a European team and a South American team. The European team lifted the trophy in only three of those 10 finals: West Germany versus Argentina in 1990, France versus Brazil in 1998 and Germany versus Argentina in 2014.

· Eight nations have won the World Cup: Brazil (5), (West) Germany (4), Italy (4), Argentina (2), France (2), Uruguay (2), England (1) and Spain (1).

· Seven of the previous 20 World Cup finals (excluding 1950) went to extra time: in 1934, 1966, 1978, 1994, 2006, 2010 and 2014.

· Two World Cup finals were decided by a penalty shootout: Brazil defeated Italy in 1994 (3-2 on penalties after a 0-0 score) and Italy beat France in 2006 (5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 score).

· The most goals scored in a World Cup final was Brazil's 5-2 win against hosts Sweden in 1958. That game featured the youngest and oldest players to net in a World Cup final: Pelé (17y-249d) and Nils Liedholm (35y-264d) respectively.

· The fastest goal in a World Cup final was netted by Johan Neeskens (01:27) in Netherlands' 2-1 defeat against West Germany in 1974. The latest goal in a final was scored by Geoff Hurst (119') in England's 4-2 win over West Germany in 1966.

· England's Geoff Hurst (3 goals versus West Germany in 1966) is the only player to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup final.

· The 2022 finalists are responsible for four of the five red cards in World Cup finals: Pedro Monzón (1990 for Argentina), Gustavo Abel Dezotti (1990 for Argentina), Marcel Desailly (1998 for France), Zinédine Zidane (2006 for France) and John Heitinga (2010 for Netherlands).

· The only player to score an own goal in a World Cup final is Mario Mandzukic in Croatia's 4-2 defeat against France in 2018. Mandzukic netted the first (own goal) and last (goal) goal of that final.

· Since 1982, all 10 World Cup finals have featured players from both FC Bayern München and Internazionale. Argentina's Lautaro Martínez (Inter), and France's Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano and Kingsley Coman (all FC Bayern) could continue this streak.

· Players attached to Internazionale have scored eight goals in World Cup finals, more than any other club (Juventus follow on six, excluding the own goal by Mario Mandzukic in 2018).

· Argentina have played four matches at Lusail Stadium this tournament, twice as many as any other team. This includes the quarter-final and semi-final. France have not played at Lusail Stadium at the 2022 World Cup.
