WA Police shot a 66 year old Indigenous man in the torso on Monday night in Broome. He was allegedly armed with a knife.
The police say the man had been a passenger in a taxi, along with two women, when a dispute arose with the taxi driver. Police will allege the man threatened the taxi driver with a knife and stabbed several tyres before Police arrived at the scene.
The man, originally from Balgo, was taken to Broome Hospital for treatment. He was later airlifted to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service for further treatment.
Police say his condition is not life threatening. An internal investigation will be conducted into the circumstances of the incident.
This incident represents the second time in less than a week that an Indigenous person is shot by police.
32 year old Dennis Doolan has been in an induced coma since he was shot by police in the Central New South Wales town of Cowra last Thursday.
It is still unclear why Mr Doolan was shot by police, but a police spokesperson has told NITV the incident is being investigated by a Critical Incident Investigation Team.
