A pregnant woman was assaulted with a hammer during a terrifying armed robbery by four masked men on Tuesday night in Melbourne.

A 24-year-old woman has told police that she was walking along a Street in Nobel Park, in Melbourne’s southeast, at about 11.30pm when a car drove past her and the occupants first whistled at her.

As the woman quickly turned into a street, the vehicle, a silver or blue Ford Falcon XR6, did a u-turn and drove up behind her.

The woman told the police that as one of the men demanded her bag, another attacked her with a hammer. She was hit on an arm as she tried to protect her head with the arms. She said the men were armed with a baseball bat,  a hammer and an axe.

The men then snatched her handbag and got back into the car.

The victim asked for her mobile phone back as she had ultrasound photos of the baby she was carrying on there.

One of the offenders threw the phone onto the ground.

Investigators believe the incident may have been linked to an attempted carjacking in a nearby area earlier that night wherein a 25-year-old man told the police that a blue Ford sedan overtook him before breaking heavily and forcing him to stop.

Three men then got out of the passenger doors of the Ford and approached the victim’s car armed with hammers.

The victim, who was travelling with a 26-year-old man, then put his car in reverse and the offenders ran back into their car.

The victim performed a u-turn and the Ford did the same, almost resulting in a collision.

The offenders continued to pursue the victim. The Ford then turned left as the victim continued to drive straight.

Two of the offenders are described as being 180cm tall, while the other is believed to be about 170cm tall.

All three men are perceived to be of African appearance and were wearing black clothing, as well as dark coloured ski masks.
