Suhani Jalota has flown all the way to London from Mumbai, India, to attend the most awaited and talked about wedding of the year - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding - as their guest.

The 23-year-old is the founder of the Myna Mahila Foundation, which was in April, as one of the charities the royal couple requested people to donate to, instead of sending or giving them wedding gifts.

“We are thrilled and really excited and honoured to have been chosen by the royal couple. The attention we have had in the last month has lent more credibility to the work we have been doing,” Ms Jalota told SBS Hindi from London.

The Foundation works with women in Mumbai’s urban slums, who are provided with stable employment close to their homes. The charity also works towards breaking taboos around menstrual hygiene by offering women access to low-cost sanitary pads and accurate information at their doorstep.

“Providing mothers in the community with these products helps them equip their daughters to stay in school. The pads are manufactured and distributed by women from these communities. The organisation also empowers its staff through training in women's health, English, Maths, and life skills such as self-defence,” Ms Jalota says.

Ms Markle visited the Foundation in January 2017 and also wrote about her experience in .

“She is very sincere and genuinely cares about these women,” Jalota says recalling her interaction with Ms Markle.

“She visited us in Mumbai and spent two days talking to the women who work with us and the young girls who are affected by these taboos and how we help them,” she says.
