Volunteer releases map of ‘all 154 Greek churches in Australia’

As the 22-year old explains in the post he shared on a Facebook group for Greek Australians, he was motivated to create the map for lack of  a similar all-inclusive ‘directory’ of Greek churches existing.

I have wanted to make this since I was 14 years old. This project took me ages, required a lot of prior research as well as some churches have limited information on them.

The mapping covers predominantly Greek Orthodox churches, but also chapels, monasteries, cathedrals and Greek Evangelical churches.

Every entry is accompanied by the corresponding church photo.

Whilst shared the initiative had a positive ‘side-effect’ in bringing closer faithful from all around Australia.

Mr Dantos’ post attracted hundreds of comments of thank you notes, praises, spontaneous online chats between strangers, but also suggestions for corrections and additions.

Mr Dantos, who works as a city planner, is an active member of Sydney’s Greek community.

Through a petition he created, he contributed in promoting the request for the lighting up of the Sydney Opera House in blue and white, on 25 March, to honour the Greek Independence bicentenary.
