Australia’s top Greek suburbs revealed to honour 1896 Olympics anniversary

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released a map of the country’s top Greek suburbs, in a gesture aimed as a tribute to the Olympic games revival in Athens.

The map, based on data extracted from the most recent 2016 census was published on socials by the Bureau on Tuesday 6 April, marking the anniversary of the 1896 Olympics.

The top Greek suburbs in each state and territory are as follows:

• QLD- Carindale (750)
• NSW- Earlwood (4,020)
• ACT- Kaleen (170)
• VIC- Reservoir (3.700)
• TAS- Sandy Bay (270)
• SA- Prospect (940)
• WA- Dianella (660)
• NT- Leanyer (310)

As per the 2016 census, roughly 400,000 Australians have declared being of Greek background.

And while the ABS map points to the suburb of Earlwood in New South Wales as the one with the biggest concentration of Greeks in the country, the state of Victoria has in fact the largest Greek demographic.

The distribution by state and territory shows Victoria recording a population of 47,240  people of Hellenic heritage followed by New South Wales (29,481), South Australia (8,682) and Queensland (3,298).
