A collection of seven new standalone documentaries screening on SBS VICEALND and NITV in August, Curious Australia gives voice to stories from underrepresented filmmakers.

The first in the series, We Are Sexual Beings, explores what being young, disabled and sexual in modern Australia is all about. Over 24 hours, three adventurous young Australians with disabilities pull back the covers on their intimate lives: Oli, an aspiring tennis champ; Maya, an earnest sweetheart; and Christina, a wild-child motor-head. The three are remarkably different but share two things in common: life-altering spinal injuries and healthy sexual appetites.

Black Empire explores the experience of First Nations’ artists in the Australian music industry. Despite Black song having played such a transformative role in Australia’s history – from Archie Roach’s ‘Took the Children Away’ to Thelma Plum’s ‘Homecoming Queen’ – it’s still seen by music execs as just another marketable asset. But what if it could be different? What if there was hope for something better? What will it ake for rapper and Larrakia man Jimblah to create his own Black Empire.
Curious Australia launches with We Are Sexual Beings premiering at 8.30pm, followed by Black Empire at 9pm, Thursday 4 August on SBS VICELAND and NITV. Curious Australia documentaries continue to air back to back on Thursday 11 and 18 August, with the final doco airing on SBS VICELAND only, on 25 August.  for all the details on what’s on when.

The Casketeers

The award-winning Kiwi documentary series that proves there is never a dull moment in life, or in death, returns for a fifth season. The series follows husband and wife Francis and Kaiora Tipene, who own and run Tipene Funerals. With their team, they guide us through previously unseen elements of tangihanga and continue to lift the veil on death in a rare mix of sorrow and joy.

As the new season begins, Francis hopes Kaiora will approve of his latest purchase of angel statues, and Tipene Funerals undertakes its first Maori Muslim tangi. It’s engagingly real drama – in this season, the team deal with COVID restrictions and also the death of a beloved Tipene whanau (‘extended family’) member, but there are abundant happy and funny moments too.

Season 5 premieres at 9.25pm, Monday 29 August on SBS VICELAND, with double episodes screening each week, and available after they air.
