Top new series in September

Spring into a massive month of viewing with 'The Good Fight’ season 4, a new season of ‘Every Family Has A Secret’, the highly anticipated ‘Hillary’, and the by-popular-demand return of some much-loved series.

Wallander

Returning to SBS On Demand is everyone’s favourite Swedish detective, Kurt Wallander. Based on novels or stories developed by legendary Swedish crime writer Henning Mankel, Wallander, played by Krister Henriksson, investigates a series of murders in and around Ystad, Skåne near the southern tip of Sweden.

All three seasons will be available as a box set, perfect for bingeing.

Shut Eye

In this dark comedy from the USA, Charlie Haverford (Jeffrey Donovan, Burn Notice) is a sham psychic with a chain of fortune-telling shopfronts. He’s also under contract for the Marks family, who run an underground criminal syndicate. When Charlie sustains head injuries on the job, he begins seeing visions, and some fundamental truths about the world in which he operates. The ensemble cast includes Isabella Rossellini as matriarch Rita Marks, Australia’s Angus Sampson as the layabout Fonso Marks and KaDee Strickland (The Player, Secrets and Lies) as Linda, Charlie’s wife.

Savages

Roschdy Zem stars as presidential hopeful Idder Chaouch – the first candidate of Algerian descent – in this thrilling new political drama from France. On the verge of becoming France’s first Maghrebi person to take up residence in the Élysée Palace, an attempt is made on Chaouch’s life on the night of the election, throwing two families into turmoil. Reflecting on the contemporary identity of France, this saga follows family as well as political themes, and will grip you from the first scenes.

Witch Hunt

Norway has done it again, this time with a whistleblower drama inspired by real events. Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (Hercules) stars as Ida Waage, CFO of a prestigious law firm. When she tracks down a money-laundering operation linked to the firm’s biggest client, the executive board begins a campaign to discredit her. Determined to seek justice, Ida alerts the police. Investigator Eirik Bråten discovers the husband of Norway’s Minister of Justice is also involved in the operation, threatening not only her credibility and career, but putting her life and the lives of everyone she loves in grave danger.

Hillary

A remarkably intimate portrait of a public woman, Hillary interweaves revealing moments from never-before-seen 2016 campaign footage with biographical chapters of Clinton’s life. Featuring exclusive interviews with Hillary Rodham Clinton herself, as well as Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, friends and journalists, the series examines how she became at once one of the most admired and vilified women in the world.

The Pier

We loved , and now thrilling Spanish drama The Pier returns. In season 2, Alejandra and Verónica’s now strong bond is threatened when Alejandra reveals the truth about her connection to Óscar. But the two women are determined to stick together and forge ahead, seeking answers about the part Óscar’s dodgy dealings played in his death. If anything, the women draw even closer to each other as they delve deeper into the mystery.

Killjoys

This sci-fi series, from the producers of Orphan Black and the creator of Lost Girl, follows a fun-loving, hard-living trio of interplanetary bounty hunters sworn to remain impartial as they chase deadly warrants throughout the Quad, a distant system on the brink of a bloody, multi-planetary class war. If you can follow all that, this show is for you! Hannah John-Kamen stars as Dutch, a much-loved top-level Killjoy with a unique gift for earning people’s trust and respect, regardless of their class. But beneath her banter and protective flirtations lies a dark and secret past.

Fargo

We don't have much longer to wait for the premiere of Fargo season 4, but until the much-anticipated new season drops, we're bringing back seasons 1–3 with a big box set drop. The first three seasons stay true to the film's location – somewhere between the snowy regions of North Dakota and Minnesota – in their tales of ordinary folks in way over their heads.

Alone

Filmed entirely by the participants themselves, Alone follows ten contenders carrying only a small backpack into the wilderness. There, they must survive in harsh, unforgiving terrain, such as Patagonia, and hunt, build a shelter and fend off predators all alone. Facing extreme isolation and psychological distress, they plunge into the unknown, chasing the $500,000 prize.

Every Family Has A Secret

Returning for a second season is this three-part SBS documentary series in which host Noni Hazlehurst meets six Australians who discover the truth about their family’s past, confronting the secrets that have shaped them. One man explores a rumour that his father was a Russian spy while a Perth woman delves into the dark past of the father she never knew. Whether it is the ill deeds of parents or revelations of unexpected family members, Every Family Has a Secret shocks, surprises and delights, reminding us that fact is often stranger than fiction.

Season 2 of Every Family Has A Secret airs weekly on SBS at 7.30pm from Tuesday 22 September. Episodes stream  after they go to air. Episodes are also available with and subtitles.

The Good Fight

It’s finally here! In long-awaited season 4, life looks very different for Reddick, Boseman and Lockhart, now a small subsidiary of a huge multinational law firm, STR Laurie. Suddenly, with all their decisions open for second-guessing by their new overlords, Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) and her colleagues are dearly missing their independence. Especially as the initial benevolence of STR Laurie begins to fade.

Hugh Dancy joins the cast this season while Rose Leslie has left. Michael J. Fox and Zach Grenier both return.

The Head

This murder mystery with an international cast is set in the Antarctic and was filmed in the Canary Islands and Iceland. A group of scientists from around the world sets to work on a climate change research mission. When six months later their pick-up arrives, seven are found murdered and two are missing. A puzzle unfolds over three timelines told through the conflicting testimonies of the last two survivors. It’ll be up to us to work out who is telling the truth about what really happened on the Polaris VI.

Invisible Heroes

Based on a previously untold true story, Invisible Heroes takes us to Santiago, Chile in 1973. Augusto Pinochet has just overthrown the president in a bloody military coup, throwing the populace into fear and turmoil. At the time, Tapani Brotherus was working as a Finnish diplomat and enjoying the expat lifestyle with his wife Lysa. But when people literally start climbing the walls into their compound, desperate for help, he ignores all diplomatic protocol and instructions from above, helping ensure safe passage to Europe for over 2,000 Chilean citizens.

This multilingual political thriller from Finland in collaboration with Chile is utterly captivating, highlighting what can happen when individuals choose to act from a moral rather than policy standpoint. Pelle Heikkilä (Midnight Sun) stars as Tapani, and real-life wife Sophia Heikkilä plays Lysa. Also look out for Mikael Persbrandt (Beck, Sex Education, ) as Swedish ambassador Harald Edelstam.
