With new shows premiering, favourites returning and a special live life drawing event, July’s offerings are heating up.

Who Gets To Stay In Australia

While more than 40,000 people are rejected each year in their pursuit for permanent residency, every three minutes, someone gains it. In this Australian television first, SBS was granted privileged access inside the Administrative Appeals Tribunal where applicants put forward their appeals before a single judge in a last-ditch attempt to stay in Australia. Capturing deeply emotional life-changing moments, for some applicants, these decisions are a matter of life or death.

Four-part series airs on SBS at 8:30pm on Wednesday nights from 1 July. All episodes will be available at SBS On Demand after they go to air, including with subtitles in and . Here is episode 1:

The Hot Zone

In 1989, the Ebola virus made its way to the US from central Africa, found in chimpanzees in a Washington, D.C. lab. There was no known cure. Based on Richard Preston’s international best-seller, this drama follows the heroic actions of U.S. Army veterinarian (played by Julianna Marguiles) who put herself in mortal danger to stop the outbreak before it spread. A hair-raising account of a rare and lethal virus and its impact on the human race, this six-part series also stars Topher Grace, Liam Cunningham, James D’Arcy and Noah Emmerich.

Life Drawing Live – Live streaming event

Triple Gold Logie winner Rove McManus hosts this special live event. A group of amateur artists, including familiar faces, will be in the studio sketching live models striking various poses. Guided by art experts, the artists will complete a series of exercises before attempting to capture a challenging final scene.

Family Rules

This popular Australian reality TV series is back for a third season. Daniella Rule is mother to nine daughters – Angela, Shenika, Helen, Kelly, Kiara, Sharna, Aleisha, Jessica and Hannah. Navigating life through its various stages and ages, Family Rules gives us an insight into a modern Indigenous family.

Family Rules season 3 episodes air on NITV at 7:30pm Sunday nights. Episodes are available at SBS On Demand after broadcast. Here is episode 1:

War of the Worlds

Astronomers in Europe detect a transmission from another galaxy, which is closely followed by an alien attack that wipes out most of the world’s population. The pockets of survivors are forced to team up, as they wonder who the attackers are and why they’re hell-bent on destroying life on Earth. The star-studded cast includes Gabriel Byrne (who also stars in ), Downton Abbey’s Elizabeth McGovern, Léa Drucker, from acclaimed and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones. Based on H.G. Wells’ 1898 novel, this contemporary take is written and created by (Misfits, Merlin).

Joint Venture

In a fictitious future in São Paulo, Brazil, marijuana has just been legalised. Now, small-time dealer Biriba (Luís Navarro) must decide whether to make his business official in a quickly saturated market, or stay on the wrong side of the law dealing harder more dangerous drugs for much bigger pay. Changing from one world to another is more difficult than he imagined, and to make matters worse, certain people from his past aren’t too happy with his decision.

Why Women Kill

From the creator of Desperate Housewives this dark comedy follows three women from different decades, all residents of the same Pasadena home, and all experiencing infidelity in their marriages. As the title reveals, all three women also end up killing someone. We meet Beth Ann Stanton in 1963, Simone Grove, onto her third marriage in 1984, and Taylor Harding, who’s in an open marriage in 2019. The solid cast includes Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin and Kirby Howell-Baptiste.

Fear The Walking Dead

A prequel to The Walking Dead this gritty drama tells the story of the onset of the undead apocalypse through the eyes of a fractured family. Widower Madison Clark (Kim Dickens) is raising her two children as well as maintaining a relationship with English teacher Travis Manawa (Cliff Curtis). Their daily stresses are exacerbated by the unforeseen chaos as a necessary survival of the fittest takes hold.

The Lawyer

In season 1 of this Danish/Swedish crime drama, Frank and Sara investigated their parents’ death, leading to the imprisonment of the perpetrator. Their lives have been turned upside down, but Frank can’t move on till he puts something else to rest ­– but to do so, he must collaborate with his arch-enemy. Stars Alexander Karim, Malin Buska, Thomas Bo Larsen and Sara Hjort Ditlevsen.

Luther

Starring Idris Elba as DCI John Luther, season 5 picks up where the fourth left off, with Luther chasing down serial killer Jeremy Lake (Enzo Cilenti) and investigating the abduction of gang leader George Cornelius’ son. Despite the short run of episodes (only 4), there is plenty to follow here, and Elba’s tortured Luther is as watchable as ever. This season also sees the return of Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) – what on earth can come from this?
