Top new series in July 2022

Winter’s heating up with new and returning series, including two new Australian series airing during NAIDOC Week. Plus, July brings the Tour de France and the inaugural Tour de France Femmes.

2022 Tour de France

Live stream all 21 stages of the Tour de France from Friday 1 July. Starting in Denmark, Le Tour wraps up, as is tradition, at Paris’s Arc de Triomphe. The momentous month of cycling doesn’t end there, as this year we also bring you the inaugural Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift. The Village S1 & S2

From creator Peter Moffat (Your Honour, Silk) this English drama sets itself the sweeping task of charting the whole of the 20^th century, through the lives of the residents of a rural Peak District village. Farming families, landed gentry, lords and ladies, rub along together as community and world events shape their lives. Sometimes grim, sometimes humorous, this ambitious series’ cast includes John Simm, Maxine Peake, Emily Beecham, Ainsley Howard and Jim Cartwright.

Seasons 1 and 2 of The Village premiere exclusively in Australia and are now streaming at SBS On Demand.

True Colours

Detective Toni Alma (Rarriwuy Hick, Wentworth) returns to her hometown to investigate a suspicious car accident. The trouble is getting people to talk to her. Toni must navigate both cultural and Western law to solve the case, alongside her police officer uncle Samuel Alma (Warren H. Williams) and ex-boyfriend Detective Nick Gawler (Luke Arnold). True Colours was filmed on country in the East Macdonnell Ranges – Yeperenye – and also stars Miranda Otto. This must-see new Australian drama is airing as part of our NAIDOC Week line-up.

True Colours airs at 8.30pm on SBS, NITV and SBS On Demand over four consecutive nights from Monday 4 to Thursday 7 July. Episodes will be available at SBS On Demand as a box set from Thursday 7 July. Start with episode 1:

Das Boot S3

“While the big explosions are taking place out at sea, a good slice of this series’ drama takes place back on dry land, where it soon becomes clear the situation can rapidly turn just as deadly.” That set the scene of season 1 of Das Boot. Now, season 3 is here, and we’re nearing the tail end of the war. We can guarantee plenty of drama is yet to unfold.

Off Country

Australian docu-series Off Country follows seven Indigenous teens over the course of a year, studying at Geelong Grammar, thousands of kilometres away from their homes. Their families are determined to give them the best education, but their separation from home takes its toll. “Sometimes you need to think, are we doing the best thing?” With great courage, the children allow us to take part in their journey, sharing the highs and lows of their life-changing experience.

Lost Luggage

Soon after the March 2016 attack on Brussels Airport, a police officer must return the personal belongings left behind. Creator Tiny Bertels was inspired by the real-life woman in charge of this task. Reading about her, she “was instantly gripped. Her stories deal with comfort, powerlessness, solidarity.”

While Samira shows great care in her job, she begins to teeter more each time she meets a victim, not ready to face her own PTSD. Touted as “a bittersweet story about finding solidarity, love and hope, even in the most difficult moments”, this Dutch-language Belgian drama stars indie rock star Lara Chedraoui as Samira.

Paraiso S2

From Spain, this drama series’ protagonists are also teenagers – Alvaro, Javi and Quino – who take on their own investigation into the disappearance of three of their friends, including Javi’s sister, who go missing after a night out. With horror and supernatural elements, this is “a beautifully filmed mix of adventure, genuinely creepy ghost story and nostalgia”. We cannot wait to see what season 2 has in store.

Don’t Leave Me

The heinous murder of a child takes investigator Elena and her son back to Venice after decades away. The case reunites Elena with old flame, Daniele. The pair work tirelessly to find the killer, while their personal lives entwine: Daniele is married to Elena’s best friend. The writers’ CVs include Gomorrah, The Newsroom and Narcos so we know we’re in good hands. The Venetian setting is also a major drawcard.

Too Close

Starring Emily Watson and Denise Gough, Too Close is based on the novel of the same name. (It was adapted for television by the novel’s author, Clara Salaman, who published it under the pseudonym, Natalie Daniels.)

Watson plays Dr Emma Robertson, a forensic psychologist tasked with analysing Connie Mortensen, accused of attempted murder of her own and her neighbour’s child. Should Connie be in jail or in a psych facility? As the women talk, Mortensen gives as good as she gets, and as much as their sessions can be combative, they also find common ground. The series was nominated for two BAFTA awards, with the two leads keeping us hooked in for the three-parter.

Helsinki Crimes

Based on Matti Yrjänä Joensuu’s bestselling novels, this eight-part Finnish drama centres on Detective Timo Harjunpää (Olli Rahkonen) – known for his honesty and empathy for victims, as well as criminals – and his partner Onerva Nykanen (Olga Temonen). Under the full bright sky of summertime, the pair are kept busy investigating a wave of murders rocking the capital city. This is a stylish polished series, as we’ve come to expect from the Nordic region.

Helsinki Crimes premieres exclusively in Australia and is now streaming at SBS On Demand.

Nasdrovia S2

In what could be the most unusual sitcom you’ve seen, the premise of this Spanish comedy is that a pair of lawyers and good friends pivot into the restaurant business, opening a Russian eatery to indulge their passion for Russian culture. Trouble ensues when it becomes the favoured spot for the local Russian mafia. If you haven’t yet seen it, it’s an easy entertaining watch, with six half-hour episodes. We’re keen to see what season 2 brings us. Leonor Watling and Hugo Silva star as our lawyers.
