Why We Hate
From executive producers Alex Gibney and Steven Spielberg, this six-part documentary is hosted by cognitive scientist Laurie Santos who examines why we hate. Covering topics including tribalism, extremism and crimes against humanity, and ending with an episode on hope, each episode drops weekly on Tuesdays. Episode 1 has already aired, with episode 2 arriving on Tuesday 1 December.

Our Boys
Our Boys is a carefully crafted dramatisation of actual events in 2014, which led to the outbreak of war in Gaza. Three Jewish teenagers are kidnapped and murdered by Hamas, and in an apparent act of retaliation, the body of a Palestinian teenager is found on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The 10-part drama follows the investigations within the internal terror division of the Shin Bet, as parents begin their anguished journey towards justice. A Hebrew and Arabic series, originating from HBO, Our Boys strives for authenticity and fairness, the result of equal creative collaboration from both sides of this painful conflict.
The Sister
SBS viewers may recognise both the star and the creator of The Sister, a new British psychological thriller from ’s Neil Cross and lauded by as a “nail-biting whodunnit that is truly haunting”. Russell Tovey () plays Nathan, who, almost a decade into his devoted marriage, is rocked to the core when an unwelcome face from the past turns up on his doorstep with shocking news, triggering a series of catastrophic decisions. Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones) and Nina Toussaint-White (Bodyguard) also star.

Spiral – final season
Popular French police procedural and legal drama Spiral presents its eighth and final season. We return to Paris and follow the personal and professional lives of the police officers, lawyers and judges at the Palais de Justice. This season, the team attempts to overcome the trauma wrought by Gilou’s incarceration, while Laure and Ali take a case no one else wants in an effort to restore their reputation – the homicide of an isolated minor with no identity.
Aquarius
Set in 1960s Los Angeles, David Duchovny stars as LAPD detective Sam Hodiak who, along with trainee detective Brian Shafe (Grey Damon), deals with the usual challenges of the job – gangs, brutal crimes and family crises – amid a shifting social context. But one criminal in particular takes up the bulk of their time: then small-time crook Charles Manson (Gethin Anthony). Aquarius picks up Manson when he’s still slowly building his cult. A gritty crime drama that’ll easily hook you in, it’s the perfect summer binge.
The Minister
Another top-quality drama from Iceland, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson () stars as newly elected Prime Minister Benedikt Ríkardsson. Already having shaken the establishment, Ríkardsson has been labelled an unorthodox radical for rising to the top on a platform of being honest and listening to the people. What most don’t know is that Ríkardsson also has bipolar disorder. As his condition worsens, the series shifts gear into more of a thriller as some in his team take advantage of his illness while others hide it. Not only are his personal and professional lives put at risk, but so too is the nation’s stability. A highly engaging series.
Low Winter Sun
Thrilling American drama series Low Winter Sun is set in modern-day Detroit and stars two British actors, Mark Strong (, Deep State) and Lennie James as detectives Frank Agnew and Joe Geddes (). With their police unit rife with corruption, the series starts with the murder by Frank of a corrupt cop. From creator Chris Mundy (Ozark, Bloodline), the atmosphere is tense and dark, with photography to match. While it seems at first to be the perfect crime, the murder activates forces that pull Agnew into the heart of Detroit’s underworld, altering his life forever. Strong is as, well, strong as ever here; it’s hard to take your eyes off his face. James is also magnetic as Geddes, the pair proving to be a formidable force.
Departure
When a passenger plane disappears over the Atlantic Ocean, Howard Lawson brings in brilliant investigator Kendra Malley to lead the team looking into what happened. While the world is waiting for answers – was it pilot suicide, terrorism, systems failure or politically motivated murder? – Malley is also grieving her husband and struggling to parent her troubled stepson, as well as facing forces undermining her investigation.
This six-part Canadian mystery drama stars Academy Award-winner Christopher Plummer as Lawson, Emmy Award-winner Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife, Next of Kin) as Malley and Kris Holden-Reid from Vikings and .
La Jauria
From Chile comes this ground-breaking thriller. A specialist female-led police force is tasked with solving gender-related crimes. Their latest case follows an allegation of abuse between a teacher and student Blanca Ibarra. Blanca, leader of a feminist movement, goes missing during a protest she’s organised. Hours later, a video is released, showing her being sexually assaulted by a group of unidentified men (La Jauria translates to The Pack). The frantic search for the perpetrators begins. From acclaimed producers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, La Jauria also covers a host of issues currently affecting Latin American women.
The Investigation
This tense true-crime drama follows the gripping six-month investigation into the murder of young Swedish journalist Kim Wall that made headlines around the world in 2017/18. Wall had been interviewing the eccentric inventor of a submarine when she was killed in Denmark. Cutting-edge forensics and dogged policing finally see the case brought to justice, but the obstacles appear at first insurmountable. Detective Jens Møller never gave up in what would become his last case and forged a strong bond to Wall’s family. From the acclaimed director of Borgen and Mindhunter, Søren Malling (Borgen, The Killing) stars as Møller.
Home Ground
Season 1 of this Norwegian drama saw Helena Mikkelsen (Ane Dahl Torp) controversially appointed head coach of men’s football team Varg. Now in season 2, Helena faces the potential sale of Adrian with the club’s bankruptcy looming. Financial concerns affect lives off field, threatening to tear the club apart from the inside. There’s Adrian’s affair with Helena’s daughter Camilla and his decision over whether to stay at Varg or attempt a return to professional football. And there’s the separation of Michael and Marianne’s 20-year relationship involving a hurtful custody battle. The arrival of a potential new club owner seems a saving grace until the investor’s dubious intentions come to light, and Helena pits her ambitions against Espen’s duty to preserve the soul of Varg.
You don't have to be a sport or even a football fan to enjoy this series, full of true-to-life drama and top-quality performances.
Follow the Money
Viewers may be familiar with season 1 of Danish drama Follow the Money that aired recently. Now, seasons 2 and 3 are here. The series starts with the discovery of a corpse near a wind farm, but the investigation soon shifts gear from the murder mystery to the dealings of environmentally friendly energy company, Energreen. Entering the boardrooms and banks of the corrupt world of economic crime, the series centres on four lives that become entwined as the rich, poor, greedy and fraudulent go to any lengths to realise their dreams.
Aruanas
From Brazil comes thrilling drama Aruanas. Three women friends set up NGO Aruana and chase leads investigating the activities of a mining company operating in the Amazon rainforest. Soon enough, they come up with plenty of evidence revealing environmental crimes, tangling them up in a dangerous web of secrets and cover-ups. Strange events occur not infrequently in their harsh reality. On top of all this, they have their own personal dramas to contend with. With intrigue and action, you’ll get swept up in the mission of these fierce heroic women.
Letterkenny
This oddball comedy from Canada is quick-witted and fast-paced. Set in a small rural town, most episodes open with telling us ‘There are five thousand people in Letterkenny. These are their problems.’ Siblings Wayne and Katy are the show’s heartbeat. They run a dairy and produce stand with the help of Wayne’s friends Daryl and Squirrely Dan. Ice hockey players and best mates Reilly and Jonesy are also involved in an on-again off-again polyamorous relationship with Katy. If you’ve never seen this show, created by Jacob Tierney and Jared Kesso (who also stars as Wayne), it’s truly one of a kind.
Monogamish
Married for 10 years, Nele and Gianni still love each other, but their love life seems to have died a slow, sexless death. When Nele begins flirting with a stranger on a dating site and it turns out to be none other than Gianni, the pair end up in therapy with a plan to start spicing up their sex life. Challenging the fairy-tale premise of ‘happily ever after’, this Swiss series is darkly funny and not afraid to face a few taboos.
Martial Universe
With sixty episodes dropping on New Year’s Eve, Martial Universe is a Chinese fantasy series for fans of Game of Thrones. Lin Dong is forsaken by his clan. When he comes across a stone talisman with magical powers, life will never be the same again. His adventures help him hone his skills as a martial artist, to keep a demon sect from taking over the world. With a huge budget, this series sparkles. Summertime binge-worthy.
