The Ghan is an Australian first foray into a genre of television often described as ‘slow TV’ - an immersive style of television, originating from Europe, which invites the viewer on an extended journey. This innovative program takes viewers aboard Australia’s most iconic passenger train trip from Adelaide to Darwin.

Three hours, no commercials, no interruptions, just the tracks beneath and stunning scenery through the heart of Australia.
The Ghan explores the foundations of modern multicultural Australia. It reveals how the construction of the transcontinental ‘Ghan line’, the subsequent development of Central Australia and the growth of Darwin, Alice Springs and Port Augusta are thanks to the contributions of Aboriginal Australians and early immigrants, including the Afghan cameleers who the train is named after.

Climb aboard The Ghan on SBS in January 2018.
