The battle lines have been drawn in The Handmaid’s Tale’s full season 5 trailer, which builds the momentum for a showdown between June, Serena and a vengeful Gilead, in the wake of Commander Waterford’s murder.

“June Osborne is a cancer,” a new Gilead commander warns in the new video, released today. “We have to cut her out.”

In the unforgettable season 4 finale, Elisabeth Moss’ June lured her primary captor and tormentor, Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes), into the demilitarised zone between Gilead and Canada (with the aid of some high-placed Gilead accomplices). Once there, June and her surviving former Handmaids murdered him in a re-enactment of a traditional Gilead “salvaging”.

In season 5 we’re promised a reckoning of sorts for the traumatised and complex protagonist June as she faces consequences for killing Commander Waterford while struggling to redefine her identity and purpose. The widowed Serena attempts to raise her profile in Toronto as Gilead’s influence creeps into Canada. Commander Lawrence works with Nick and Aunt Lydia as he tries to reform Gilead and rise in power. June, Luke and Moira fight Gilead from a distance as they continue their mission to save and reunite with Hannah.
