At this point, the gun debate in America has turned into a depressing cycle of mass death, outrage, thoughts and prayers, and inaction. If lawmakers aren’t going to be moved by the murder of 20 six and seven-year-olds, they aren’t going to be prompted to legislate after the loss of concert and church goers.
So all they have left to offer are thoughts and prayers.
The futility of all of this is painfully obvious as Samantha Bee begs for something – anything – to be done about the regular calamity that befalls American communities.
Of course, as with most other large divisive American political issues, people seem to be living in lots of different realities with movable facts and figures and no one is winning an argument on this anytime soon.
And it may all come down to the idea that the American government isn’t doing anything because Americans don’t want them to. Maybe lots of Americans have gotten used to having guns. They make them feel powerful and safe and they do not want to lose that feeling.
