Happy days! The arrival of the third and final season of Shrill is both joyous news and sad all at the same time, because why does it have to end so soon?
The new season is coming to SBS VICELAND with double eps every Thursday at 9.20pm from June 3. Now, you can also stream it over at SBS On Demand, but for those who are planning to settle in for a Thursday VICELAND night of Jeopardy!, 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and The Curse of Oak Island, before saying hello to Annie and Fran again, we're giving you a heads up so you can block out the evening!
So what's coming up in Season 3?
The new and final season delivers more of what we've come to expect, as a newly single Annie jumps back into the dating world. (And warning, warning: there's a few spoilers from the previous seasons below, too, so if you are planning a marathon binge of seasons 1 and 2 before you catch season 3, maybe head over to and get stuck into that.)
The new season finds Annie (Aidy Bryant) energised by her breakup with dud boyfriend Ryan (Luka Jones) and her newfound momentum at work. Annie feels like everything is finally falling into place for her, but does she actually know how to get what she wants?
Also returning for the season final are cast regulars Lolly Adefope, Ian Owens and John Cameron Mitchell. Showrunner and executive producer Ali Rushfield revealed during the Television Critics Association Winter 2021 Press Tour presentation panel that going into season 3 they didn't realise it would be their last. “We didn’t know going in, but we knew somewhere in the middle of there, with enough time to make an ending we were good with and lands the characters in a good place. So, we didn’t know then, but we feel good with the way it landed.”
Aidy Bryant is also sad to see the end of the series saying, “I’m, of course, sad the show is ending because I love working with Lindy and Ali [and our cast], but I’m also so proud of what we’ve made, and it feels like a really nice beginning, middle, and end to me."
But they are also aware of the importance of the show, with author of the original book Shrill Lindy West adding, “I think we were careful not to think of it as 'activism' because we wanted it to be effective as the story – because that’s the best way to secretly feed people activism. We wanted to make a great show that affected people emotionally, that didn’t feel like you were being force-fed a lesson. That was top of mind always, and it really served those moments and helped them land.”
“I think people will be excited to see these final episodes that talk about not only where she’s started but where she’s landed,” said Bryant, and we for one are very excited.
