Lena Dunham is the perfect travel companion

On Travel Man, the 'Girls' creator is up for most things but knows where to draw the line - at blood pudding.

There’s nothing worse than going sightseeing with a lousy travel companion. You know the type – someone who’s always complaining (about the weather, the cost, the locals not speaking English) and not wanting to do anything you want to. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, someone who insists on doing everything, and doesn’t allow any time for pausing and soaking up the local ambience.

In Girls creator Lena Dunham, Travel Man’s Richard Ayoade may just have found the perfect middle ground. On their two-day trip to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Dunham is able to muster up excitement for pretty much everything on the agenda, which includes star-gazing and golf, but is not backwards about saying when she’s had her fill of volcano climbing or sculpture walks. A sensible tourist knows when to quit while they're ahead.

There is one thing at which she draws the line: sweet blood sausage. “Blood pudding is a hard no,” she says when presented with a plate of the stuff. “[It’s] like a jazzercise class or a Dave Matthews Band concert that I’ve been able to avoid for 30 years and I’m not stopping now.” Alcohol, though, is fine, seemingly at any time of the day, but might not have been the best idea before a whale- and dolphin-watching cruise.
