At 17 hours, The Ghan is bigger than ever before!

This Sunday 14 January, from 2:40am – 8.30pm, SBS VICELAND will be all train, all day, with the spectacular journey of The Ghan. Because Australia demanded it, it's back for a very slow 17 hours.

Last Sunday night SBS tried something a little bit different withThe Ghan: Australia’s Greatest Train Journey. For three hours, Australian TV viewers were transfixed by the iconic train traveling from Adelaide to Darwin. It was a TV event that had people talking, with the show trending #1 on Twitter as viewers enjoyed this new type of slow TV experience.

People demanded more of it and SBS VICELAND has listened. This Sunday, you can spend your entire day with The Ghan. From just after 2:40am through to 8:30pm at night, you can watch a full 17 hours of a train doing what a train does best.

Produced by Mint Pictures for SBS, The Ghan: Australia’s Greatest Train Journey explores a story important to our shared multicultural history. The train line and subsequent development of central Australia can be attributed to local Indigenous communities as well as early immigrants, including Europeans, Chinese, and the Afghan cameleers ‘The Ghan’ is named after.

This 17 hour extended-duration version captures the entire iconic 2979 kilometre rail journey from Adelaide to Darwin, omitting the black screen night time segments of travel. Unlike the three hour version, this version is not commercial-free, which gives you enough time for a toilet break in-between the train action.
