Transgender woman recently assaulted on camera found murdered

A 23-year-old black transgender woman has been murdered in the United States, one month after being violently assaulted in an that later went viral and drew widespread criticism.

Muhlaysia Booker was fatally shot near a golf course in Dallas, Texas, on May 18. At this stage, , with local police reaching out to the community for assistance.

"We recognise that hate crimes, if you will, are a serious topic," Assistant Dallas Police Chief Avery Moore said at a press conference over the weekend, according to . "We at the Dallas Police Department take them serious."

Following Booker's murder, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings took to social media to express his condolences to her family and loved ones.

"I am deeply saddened to learn of the murder of Muhlaysia Booker," he tweeted on Sunday. "I call on anyone with information on this homicide to please contact the Dallas Police Department."
after being beaten by several men in a parking lot, while others cheered and filmed the attack. According to a police report, Booker had accidentally backed into a vehicle, and the driver of that car held her at gun point until she paid for the damages. 

A crowd formed, and a man was offered $200 to beat Booker, with one man charged with aggravated assault following the attack. 

"This has been a rough week for myself, the transgender community and also the city of Dallas," Booker said at a press conference after the April attack. "This time, I can stand before you ... whereas in other scenarios, we are at a memorial."

The organisation's statistics show that 26 transgender people, the majority women, were killed in 2018. Additionally, 80 per cent of trans women killed in the past six years were women of colour.
