This Vatican priest says some saints were “probably gay”

A Jesuit priest who was recently appointed by Pope Francis to the Vatican has written on his Facebook page that some saints were most likely gay.

Father James Martin posted an article about a bishop leading an LGBT+ Catholic gathering and received a mixed response from online commenters.

One wrote: “Any cannonised saints would not be impressed.”

To which Fr. Martin promptly replied: “Some of them were probably gay. A certain percentage of humanity is gay, and so were most likely some of the saints. You may be surprised when you get to heaven to be greeted by LGBT men and women.”

The Jesuit priest is a champion of gay rights and recently wrote a book entitled Building a Bridge about how the Catholic church and LGBT+ community can “enter into a relationship of respect, compassion and sensitivity.”

He also called on Catholics to “stand with their LGBT brothers and sisters” following the Pulse nightclub massacre last year.

Fr. Martin’s post has since attracted hundreds of comments and while many are supportive—he’s also been attacked for his views.
