Current reigning Formula One world champion, Lewis Hamilton has been forced to apologise after he posted a video on social media mocking his young nephew for wearing a dress.
Hamilton posted the video to his Instagram story where it was later posted to Twitter and gained over 1,000 retweets.
"I'm so sad right now," Hamilton says before turning the camera onto the young boy, "look at my nephew.
"Why are you wearing a princess dress? Is this what you got for Christmas? Why did you ask for a princess dress for Christmas? Boys don't wear princess dresses!"
Hamilton's comments stirred up Twitter with many criticising him for his outburst directed at the obviously happy young child.
After the backlash, Hamilton took to social media once more to make an apology. In a series of tweets, the 32-year-old claimed the video was a "lapse in judgement".
"Yesterday I was playing around with my nephew and realised that my words were inappropriate so I removed the post," he wrote.
"I meant no harm and did not mean to offend anyone at all. I love that my nephew feels free to express himself as we all should."
In the final tweet, Hamilton hoped he could be forgiven for his actions writing, "I have always been in support of anyone living their life exactly how they wish and I hope I can be forgiven for this lapse in judgement".
Some have critiqued Hamilton's apology as worthless as he simultaneously began to "like" any tweets supporting him and calling out the backlash as overblown.
