After months of surrounding the return of the iconic TV drama The L Word, it’s been confirmed that Showtime is in the process of developing a new season.
In May, the show’s creator Ilene Chaiken cryptically tweeted: “So excited! Can’t wait…!” and tagged a number of the show’s cast members.
Chaiken also hinted that The L Word might make a comeback in an interview with EW—saying that no TV series since has represented the lesbian community in the same way.

“When we went off the air in 2009, I think a lot of people thought: ‘Okay, the baton is passed now, and there will be lots of shows that portray lesbian life.
“There’s really nothing. It feels like maybe it should come back.”
Chaiken tweeted today: " Sequel Is Officially In Development" and according to , she'll serve as executive producer for the new series—which will feature a new ensemble cast of women as well as a new writer and showrunner.
However, if the project is greenlit, it’s expected that Jennifer Beals, Kate Moennig and Leisha Hailey will sign on as executive producers and make cameo appearances “as a point of connection” to the original series.
Jennifer Beals has spoken about the project in an and says that 2017 is the right moment for the show to return.
“There was this renaissance, in a way, going on with marriage equality coming to the forefront.
“It was a different terrain and we thought you can start telling stories in a different way and there’s a whole new generation coming up that views sexuality in a different way.
“Then, the election happened. I remember I was in South Dakota watching the returns come in and I texted Ilene and I said, “We need to do something.” She said, “Let’s get together and talk about it.”
Since the news was announced, lesbian Twitter has been going nuts, with celebrities such as Tegan & Sara, Cameron Esposito and Stephanie Beatriz tweeting excitedly about the show's return.
There's no word as to when the new series is expected to air but Beals says once a showrunner is found, the project will "be a bullet train".
The actor has also said that the news series won't exactly be a reboot.
"For other shows, I kinda get the word reboot," she tells EW.
"This is like, 'We’ve got to go back on because we are needed.' It’s needed, which is a different calling".
