Kasia Niewiadoma won the 2024 Tour de France Femmes by just four seconds after a thrilling finale that saw rival Demi Vollering claim the stage atop Alpe d’Huez.

Niewiadoma’s four-second margin was the closest gap between first and second overall in the history of both the men’s and women’s Tours de France, with Vollering desperate to make amends for her crucial crash on Stage 5.

“Four seconds seem to be magical now,” Niewiadoma said of her winning margin, per The Guardian.

“Throughout my whole career there were so many times I missed out on victories.

“I feel like this week was perfect for me and my team. To be able to win big races, you need everything on your side.”
The Canyon-SRAM rider had kept a close eye on Vollering for the majority of the 149.9-kilometre stage until it was time for the penultimate climb of the day, the Col du Glandon.

With less than three kilometres remaining until the summit, Vollering launched an attack to drop Niewiadoma and emphatically erase her 1’15” deficit – taking over the virtual classification during her descent.

From there, the SD Worx-Protime rider was expected to continue until the Alpe d’Huez, but was instead made to do most of the work as fellow escapee Pauliena Rooijakkers refused to exchange equal turns.

Rooijakkers was also in the mix for GC honours, and as the Fenix-Deceuninck rider followed Vollering to the final climb, Niewiadoma slowly reduced her deficit back down to 44 seconds.

From there, the iconic Alpe d’Huez played host to a thrilling finale to the women’s stage race, where Vollering would eventually attack Rooijakkers to take both stage honours and the 10-second bonus.

It left Niewiadoma with a little over a minute to give everything she had left to retain her yellow jersey, and with four seconds to spare – despite Evita Muzic (FDJ-Suez) finishing fourth – the 29-year-old held on for an incredible overall victory.

“Hopefully this will attract more ladies to hop on the bike,” Niewiadoma added.

“It feels amazing to be at the top step, to be rewarded for all the hard work. We’re very proud to be at the top.”
