NBA scouts arrive in Australia to watch Giddey break NBL record

Scouts from the NBA side Toronto Raptors watched on from quarantine in Sydney as Adelaide 36ers youngster Josh Giddey became the youngest Australian in NBL history to record a triple-double.

Giddey had a night to remember, even though his side Adelaide lost by 16 points to the NZ Breakers, recording a stat line of 12 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds.
The 18-year-old is projected to be a first-round pick in this year’s NBA draft, and could even go as high as the top 10.

NBA sides are so serious about assessing the young Aussie that according to NBL commentator Liam Santamaria, scouts from the Raptors were watching from quarantine in Sydney where they will have to wait before getting a closer look.

“Shoutout to the Toronto Raptors scouts keeping a close eye on things from quarantine in Sydney,” Santamaria said in commentary of the 36ers' clash with New Zealand.

“Good to see them making the trip out, 14 days tucked away, come out and watch this young fella live.”
Giddey also set another record during the match; he recorded the most assist by a local player in their first NBL season with 171 so far.
The Melbourne-born youngster also leads the league in assists per game with 7.4 and leads all guards in rebounding with 7.1 per game.
With the draft set to take place on July 29th, Giddey has signed with agency Octagon Basketball that represents superstars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Steph Curry.
Currently, in 7th position with 10 wins and 16 losses, Adelaide 36ers are unlikely to make the NBL playoffs - but there is still plenty of reason to continue to watch them as Giddey attempts to keep up his form and impress those NBA scouts.
The 36ers next play on Saturday night against the Brisbane Bullets, which you can watch LIVE, FREE and in HD on SBS On Demand.
