Milan benefitted from a perfect set up by his Lidl-Trek team in the last kilometre, able to easily go around Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) after the Colombian tried to launch early and catch him out.

It was another milestone in what has been a dream campaign for the 23-year-old Italian, as he holds a commanding lead in the points classification with three wins at his home Grand Tour under his belt.

“I was delivered in perfect position before the sprint," Milan said following the stage.

"Simone Consonni started his lead out from 400 metres to go. It’s impressive how everyone on the team was committed to the sprint finish. I’m super happy and proud of my team.”

The flattest stage on offer at this year's Giro d'Italia threatened echelons to disrupt the peloton, and came into effect with 60 kilometres to go as the bunch was split into three groups, with stage winner Milan having to work hard to get back in the wheels.

The crosswinds caused no significant changes though, with the GC riders all together in the front group.
"Let's say that it was a moment where I stopped, and these echelons happened," Milan said of the crosswinds incident.

"The guys did an amazing job, like always. We pushed full gas to come back and catch the first group. Then we always stayed in the front, and they delivered me to the perfect position.
