Herfoss has won his third Superbike Championship at The Bend, South Australia after seeing off his main title rival, McMartin Racing Ducati’s Josh Waters, in the final round of competition.
The two rivals came into the meeting locked on points and faced a winner-takes-all fight for the crown, with Herfoss managing to hold off Waters by 0.25 seconds in the opening race of the day to take a slender six-point lead into the final 11 laps of the season.
Herfoss got out to an early lead in race two before Waters took the lead into turn one, continuing his advantage until the sixth lap when Herfoss went under him at turn one.
Waters slipped off at turn six of lap eight, all but ending his Championship hopes and promoting Yamaha Factory Racing's Mike Jones to second in the race, three seconds behind Herfoss and five ahead of Cru Halliday in third.
Herfoss won the ASBK Championship by 20 points over Waters, joining Jones, Shawn Giles, Glenn Allerton, Wayne Maxwell and his McMartin Racing Ducati rival as a member of the three-time championship winning club.
An emotional Herfoss paid tribute to Waters at the end of the race.
"I've ridden against him for half of my life,” he said on their rivalry.
“There was a lot of pressure (today). I rode the best I could and controlled the race from start to finish.”
The 36-year-old signed off on his decade-long career with Honda Australia in style, adding to his 2016 and 2018 season wins with his contract set to expire at the end of the year, leaving him as a free agent in 2024.
