There are calls for the Australian Rugby League team to adopt the Indigenous All Stars pre-game war cry.

The Unity Dance has been developed by leading First Nations Rugby League identities, including Dean Widders, George Rose, Preston Campbell and Timana Tahu over the past decade, and is currently performed by the Indigenous All Stars to open their matches against New Zealand Maori.

Anaiwan man Widders, who stars in 'Araatika: Rise Up!', an inspirational documentary that charts the journey of the dance from its inception to the present, said he "would love to see" Australia perform it.

"I think it's important. I honestly believe that an Australian sporting code is going to do it soon, having that representation of Indigenous culture on the national stage," he told NITV News.

"And I think it's the responsibility of rugby league to do it first."
New Indigenous All Stars captain Josh Addo-Carr is set to lead the latest iteration of the dance in Saturday's clash against the Maori, with Widders of the opinion that the speedster could be crucial in advancing discussions with the Kangaroos.

I think the Fox (Josh Addo-Carr) and Latrell could really lead it too. Fox is a leader from the word go and his attitude in camp has been amazing," he said.

Rugby League Players Association CEO Clint Newton has backed a "respectful process" for discussing the idea.

"Rugby league is cloaked in a rich history of indigenous people who have contributed so greatly to the game," he said.

"We are happy to support a respectful process that works toward getting to a point where all relevant stakeholders can put forward their views safely, and all those views are treated with compassion and care."

The Kangaroos, led by Cameron Smith, performed an Acknowledgement To Country at the 2017 World Cup.
