President Joe Biden and Donald Trump have called for unity one day after an assassination attempt on Mr Trump.

Donald Trump was shot in the ear during a campaign rally yesterday, an attack that will likely reshape this year’s U-S presidential race.

The gunman opened fire from the roof of a building about 140 metres from the stage where Donald Trump was speaking, hitting the former president while killing one rally attendee and critically wounding two others.

The former president has posted on his Truth Social platform saying that Americans must "remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness" while stressing that it is "more important than ever that we stand United...not allowing Evil to Win."

And now President Biden says, despite their political differences, both sides of politics must reject this form of violence.

"An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. Everything. It's not who we are as a nation. It's not America. And we cannot allow this to happen. Unity is the most elusive goal of all. But nothing is important than that right now. Unity."

Meanwhile, political leaders around the world - and in Australia - have condemned the shooting of Donald Trump.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says he wishes Trump a speedy recovery.

"On behalf of all of Venezuela and our people, I want to condemn and repudiate the attack against former president Donald Trump, wish him a speedy recovery, and may God bless the people of the United States and give them peace and tranquillity. We have been adversaries, but I wish president Trump health, a long life, and I condemn this attack."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the attack is unacceptable.

"This was an inexcusable attack on the democratic values that Australians and Americans share and the freedom that we treasure. These values are ones that unite our two countries. It is the basis of our alliance. And all Australians stand with our friends in the United States at this difficult time."

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus is travelling to the Netherlands to attend the 10th anniversary commemoration for the downing of Flight MH-17.

On July 14, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH-17 was downed by a Russian-made missile, while flying over the conflict-hit eastern Ukraine.

There were no survivors among the 298 people on board the flight - including 38 passengers from Australia.

Those killed came from 17 countries, including Malaysia and the UK.

Families of the victims will be at the official commemoration.

A Dutch court in November 2022 found three men guilty of murder for the downing of MH-17.

The men - two Russians and one Ukrainian - were found guilty in absentia and sentenced to life in jail.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings for parts of southeast Australia, starting in Tasmania before extending to Victoria and New South Wales.

Parts of southeast Australia should expect winds strong enough to bring down trees or power lines today.

Tasmania's State Emergency Service is warning communities to prepare for damaging winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology's Miriam Bradbury provided this update.

"A windy wintry blast is on the way for south-eastern Australia, we already have severe weather warnings current for parts of these three states for damaging winds strong enough to bring down trees or power lines, put debris across the roads that may lead to dangerous driving conditions. Those damaging winds are likely to start, through exposed coastal and elevated parts of Tasmania, gradually extending to the remaining Tassie warning areas, Southern Victoria and southern Alpine New South Wales."

In tennis,

Spain's Carlos Alcaraz has overpowered Novak Djokovic in straight sets in a rematch of last year's Wimbledon final to successfully defend his title.

21-year-old Alcaraz totally outclassed Djokovic to win 6-2 6-2 7-6(4).

He told the crowd winning Wimbledon is literally a dream come true.

"Well honestly, it is a dream for me, winning this trophy. I did an interview when I was 12 or 11 years old, I said that my dream is to win Wimbledon so I'm repeating my dream. I wanted to keep going but obviously it's a great feeling to play in this court, in this beautiful court, to lift this amazing trophy. I said it before, but for me this is the most beautiful tournament, most beautiful court and obviously the most beautiful trophy."
