The Olympic closing ceremony in Paris is taking place as the Olympic flag is passed to next host, Los Angeles.

The iconic Stade de France, seating 80 thousand, has been transformed into a gigantic concert hall.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Snoop Dogg are among more than 100 performers, acrobats, dancers, and circus artists to feature in the two-and-a-half-hour show.

These spectators say they're sad the Paris Games are drawing to a close.

MARIA: “I think we’re more excited about the closing ceremony than anything really, aren't we?”
JOHN: “We’ve been to Paris before and we’ve really enjoyed it.”
MARIA: “We loved it.”
KAZUHIRO: “Well it’s kind of sad (the Games are ending) but I really enjoyed it, so I’m looking forward to the LA (Games) four years later, yeah I’m looking forward to the next Olympics.”
VIVIANNE: “Oh incredible, I can't believe all the Games in the middle of all these amazing monuments, it was like living in a dream.”

The Greens have criticised the federal government for their unwillingness to negotiate regulations for people suffering under the housing crisis.

New Minister for Housing Clare O'Neil has turned down policies suggested by the Greens, such as a rent freeze or an increase to funding for public housing.

It comes as the Reserve Bank announced that interest rates will remain at 4.35 per cent, further adding pressure on home owners and renters.

Speaking to Sky News, Green's Housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather says the situation will only become worse.

"The reality is, if they continue down this path, that's more single mums evicted onto the street because they can't afford the rent, more young people giving up on ever being able to afford to buy a home, more rough sleepers on our streets and tents popping up in parks across the country. I mean, this is becoming a bit of a sick joke: that we have a Labor government that are giving 165 billion dollars and tax handouts to property investors and can't even negotiate with the greens to spend a little bit more on public and affordable housing."

Indigenous knowledge systems will be a focus of a revamped set of scientific priorities announced by the federal government.

The new National Science Statement and National Science and Research Priorities replace the current framework, published in 2015, which the government said was "no longer fit for purpose".

In a first for the policy, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will be prioritised in the sector by incorporating Indigenous knowledge in emerging technologies - particularly digital and data - while protecting their cultural and intellectual property.

Under the framework, research that affects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will be guided by them, whether as community leaders, traditional knowledge holders or researchers.

The policy also calls for research to address the approach to climate change adaptation that supports regional and remote communities.

Israel has ordered yet another evacuation in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, as they conduct their third military operation there since October.

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees says more than 75,000 Palestinians in southern Gaza have been forced to flee in the past few days.

The latest evacuation orders apply to areas in Khan Younis, including parts of an Israeli-declared humanitarian zone.

Among the displaced people is Umm Ra'fat al-Mghaiar. She says there's nowhere left to go.

"Where do I go? I don't know where to go, I'm sitting here, I don't know where to go because there is no place. All the places are crowded, there is no place to go and here we are sitting, waiting for God's relief. We have not taken out our belongings yet. The building collapsed on our belongings."

Israel says it is targeting Hamas fighters who it says are still operating there, despite repeated offensives.

To the Olympics, Australia has had its best-ever result at the Olympic Games after finishing fourth on the medal tally at the end of day 16.

Australian track cyclist Matt Richardson took silver in the men's keirin, securing his third medal of the games and finishing runner-up to the Dutch cyclist.

Also in the men's keirin, track cyclist Matt Glaetzer won bronze to secure his first individual medal of the games.

In basketball, centre Ezi Magbegor scored 30 points for the Opals, scoring the team bronze against Belgium.

Finishing with 18 Gold medals and 43 overall, Australia sits fourth on the medal tally after the United States, China, and Japan.
