The prime minister says his optimism for a better future for Indigenous Australians still burns as he spoke about a new focus for Indigenous affairs.

Speaking to attendees at the Garma Festival, the prime minister announced a First Nations Economic Partnership with the Coalition of Peaks, a $20 million investment to build the Garma Institute, and a tertiary education centre owned and run by Yolngu people.

He says he did not return to the Garma Festival to discuss the failed voice referendum, but instead to continue pursuing a pathway to unity.

Yothu Yindi Foundation chief executive Denise Bowden says the result of October's referendum had been soul-crushing.

"Let's strengthen ourselves to the task ahead. And remember that after the fire comes the rain, then new growth from where springs the hopes and dreams of the future. Let's find the strength of renewal and new beginnings for the country and for its people."

Police in the Northern Territory are delivering an apology for the injustices police have inflicted on Indigenous people for the last 150 years.

Speaking at the Garma Festival, Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy says he will recognise the harm done by the Northern Territory police force.

Michael Murphy says the death of Indigenous man Kumanjayi Walker offered an opportunity for the force to reflect on its history.

Recent reports show nearly 46,000 children and young adults in Australia do not have a home as charities call for more government support.

New data released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reveals an estimated 120,000 Australians do not have a home.

According to the report, more than 80 per cent of young people seeking help from specialist homeless services between 2022 and 2023 were not accompanied by an adult.

The report says these figures are likely underestimated, as many children between 10 and 14 years old are unlikely to approach these services alone.

Charity Kids Under Cover is using Homeless Week, starting Saturday, to call on state and federal governments to pump money into programs that will steer young people away from an adulthood spent without a home.

US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump says he has agreed to debate Vice President Kamala Harris on Fox News.

Mr Trump says he has agreed to an offer from Fox News to hold a debate on September 4th with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.

Ms Harris agreed to debate the Republican nominee in July, but Donald Trump said he would not debate her because she was not the official candidate.

Democratic National Committee chair Jaime Harrison has now confirmed that Kamala Harris is the nominee.

"The outpouring of support we have witnessed for the vice president has been unprecedented. We knew your ballots would come back quickly, but the fact that we can say today, just one day after we opened voting, that the vice president has crossed the majority threshold and will officially be our nominee next week, folks, that is simply outstanding."

To the Olympics now...

Australian BMX racer Saya Sakakibara has shed tears of joy after becoming the first Australian to win Olympic gold in the sport.

Watched by her brother Kai, who suffered a brain injury in a crash in a World Cup race in Bathurst in 2020, Sakakibara delivered the race of her life.

Three years after she was taken away in a stretcher during the semi-finals of the Tokyo Games, the 24-year-old Gold Coast rider says she recovered from COVID earlier in the week, just in time to make her stunning comeback.

She performed with fantastic consistency, winning all three of her quarter-final heats and all three of Saturday's semi-final races too, also producing the two fastest times in qualifying in the final.
