US President Donald Trump is defending his daughter Ivanka Trump after she took his place at a meeting of G20 world leaders, an event that raised some eyebrows and drew sharp rebuke from the daughter of a rival former presidential candidate who was drawn into the fray.

A Russian delegate posted a photo of Ms Trump in her father's seat on Twitter, igniting debate around the appropriateness of his actions.

Mr Trump has called the move "very standard", a sentiment shared by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has brushed it off.

On Monday, the US leader sent a tweet referring to the daughter of Hillary Clinton, his Democratic rival in last year's presidential election.

Ms Clinton is also the daughter of former US president Bill Clinton.

"If Chelsea Clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother, as her mother gave our country away, the Fake News would say CHELSEA FOR PRES!" he said.

Ms Clinton responded on Twitter: "Good morning Mr. President. It would never have occurred to my mother or my father to ask me. Were you giving our country away? Hoping not."
