A man has pulled Defence Minister Marise Payne aside after a press conference and told her that homeless people were not seeing the benefits of any government funding for them.

Senator Payne had just given an outdoor press conference in the Sydney CBD about the deteriorating relationship between the Australian and Indonesian military forces.

The man, not a member of the media, listened intently to the conference and then followed the minister after she finished and questioned her about the plight of the homeless.

Senator Payne told him the prime minister committed millions to homelessness last year.

"Well, we can't see it," he replied.

Senator Payne thanked the man for raising the issue.

"I hope we can have a chat some other time. Thank you very much," he said.
