US may have to 'totally destroy' North Korea: Trump

Donald Trump's threat to North Korea was stern, it was direct, and it was unequivocal.

"The United States has great strength and patience. But if it is forced to defend itself or its alies, we will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea."

Mr Trump also appeared to show little regard for North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, reducing him to a nickname.

"Rocket man is on a suicide mission for himself and for his regime. The United States is ready, willing and able, but hopefully this will not be necessary. That's what the United Nations is all about. That's what the United Nations is for. Let's see how they do."

Sweden's Foreign Minister, Margot Wallstrom said Donald Trump's speech was "the wrong speech, at the wrong time, to the wrong audience."

While Julie Bishop, who is leading Australia's delegation at the UN, told Sky News it was important to focus on the intentions rather than the rhetoric.

The President is highlighting, the illegal nature of Kim Jong-Un's regime in carrying out numerous, multiple, ballistic missile tests and nuclear tests, in defiance of International law and defiance of UN Security Council resolutions, I think the focus should be on North Korea's behaviour and not how the President may or may not describe him.

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull had a similar response to the Seven Network.

Well it's stating the reality. It's very important that North Korea understands that if it attacks the United States or its allies as the president said, the United States will respond. And it will respond in a way that will end the North Korean regime. I mean, it is a situation of increasing gravity and risk and it is vital that the UN, and that is where the President was speaking increase the economic sanctions on North Korea so that it can be brought to its senses without conflict.

The US President also blasted Iran, labelling it "a corrupt dictatorship" and calling the Iran nuclear deal "an embarrassment".

"The Iran deal was one of the worst and one-side transactions the United States has ever entered into. Frankly, that deal is an embarrassment to the United States, and I don't think you've heard the last of it. It is time for the entire world to join us in demanding that Iran's government end its pursuit of death and destruction."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu too, echoed the sentiment, saying 'change it, or cancel it'.

"From the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean, from Tehran to Tartus, an Iranian curtain is descending across the Middle East. Iran spreads this curtain of tyranny and terror over Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and elsewhere. And it pledges to extinguish the light of Israel. Today I have a simple message for Ayatollah Khomenei - the dictator of Iran. The light of Israel will NEVER be extinguished."

Iran called President Trump's speech an "ignorant hate speech" that "belonged in medieval times, not at the UN in the 21st century."

All this came just moments after UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had urged statesmanship.

"When tensions rise, so does the chance of miscalculation. Fiery talk can lead to fatal misunderstandings. The solution must be political and this is a time for statesmanship. We must not sleepwalk our way into war."
