US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe have played a round of golf in the Florida sunshine, though journalists were prevented from watching the match.

Trump did post a photograph on Twitter of the two leaders on Saturday giving each other a high-five. "Having a great time hosting Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in the United States!," Trump tweeted.

Abe and Trump stayed at Mar-a-Lago, Trump's personal resort, after arriving in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday evening.

After arriving at the Trump National Jupiter Golf Club & Spa, the pool of White House reporters were brought to a room in which the windows and doors were covered with a black plastic that prevented them from seeing outside.

Photographers were told not to take pictures on the grounds of the "private club".

Trump's two-day meeting with Abe was a first glimpse of how the New York real estate tycoon might conduct diplomacy during his four-year term.

Before the visit, a White House official said that Trump "believes he can get the measure of people through more informal settings" and predicted similar events outside of Washington with visiting leaders "from time to time".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet Trump in Washington on Monday.

Earlier in the day, a few dozen protesters along the route to the golf club held signs that read "Stop Hate," "Resist" and "The Power of the People is Stronger Than the People in Power."

Abe was the first foreign leader to visit then president-elect Trump at Trump Tower in Manhattan just days after the November elections.

On Friday, Trump called for closer ties with Japan, while describing a "great friendship" with Abe.
