Tributes for Tas woman killed in New York

Family and friends have paid tribute to Madison Lyden, 23, who was killed while travelling in New York.

A young Tasmanian woman killed in a cycling accident in New York has been remembered by family and friends as a courageous, caring soul with a love of adventure.

Hundreds packed a room at Hobart's Bellerive Oval for the funeral of Madison Lyden, 23, who died after being struck by a garbage truck earlier this month.

Her father Andrew fought back tears as he described Madison as a warrior who despised injustice and bullies.

"As a parent, there are no words to describe the pain of losing a child," he told the service on Friday.

"I will miss her with all my heart.

"You put more into your 23 years than a lot of people put into a lifetime."

Madison was courageous, funny and unbelievably clever, her twin sister Paige said.

"She was wise beyond her years. Madison will always be an inspiration to me."

Ms Lyden's service heard of her love of animals, adventure and her psychology degree.

She had moved in 2016 from Lauderdale in Tasmania to Geelong, Victoria, to study and was travelling with a friend in New York when she died.

She wanted to complete an honours degree.

The driver of the garbage truck was later arrested on charges including driving while intoxicated.

"On our last night together, we watched the sun rise over New York City," Madison's friend Pam said.

One hundred white balloons were released from the oval in Madison's memory.
