Six rescued from yacht off north Tasmania

Six people have been winched to safety from a yacht returning from the Sydney to Hobart race after it began taking on water.

Six people have been rescued from a yacht that was taking on water while returning from the Sydney to Hobart race.

Marine Rescue Eden received the may day call from Hollywood Boulevard on Sunday.

The six were winched to safety from the 16 metre yacht off Flinders Island to the northeast of Tasmania.

"All of a sudden we heard this massive carbon fibre crash," crew member Michael Spies told the Seven Network on Sunday.

Paramedics who rushed to rescue the crew said it was a difficult operation because of the winds and swells.

Yacht owner Ray Roberts was glad to see the crew unharmed.

"(The) primary element of anything is the safety of human life," he said.

"It's great to see them."
