Severe thunderstorm warning lifted for Tas

The worst of severe thunderstorms expected to hit Tasmania have passed with the weather bureau lifting a warning on Sunday night.

Hobart has been spared from a second round of severe thunderstorms as a low-pressure system moves away from Tasmania.

A severe thunderstorm warning has been cancelled for Hobart and surrounds, and across most parts of the state on Sunday night after the worst of the storms hit earlier in the day.

Hobart recorded 26.6 mm of rainfall in the 1.5 hours to 7pm while 12mm of rain fell in just 16 minutes at Leslie Vale in the southeast on Sunday, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Large hail, 2cm in size, was reported at Brighton.

Senior meteorologist Rachel McInerney told AAP the low-pressure system bringing the rain would move away on Monday.

In Tasmania's northeast, Gray recorded 80mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday after a dump of 95mm in the same time period the previous day.

Many roads in southern Tasmania have been closed due to flooding.

The State Emergency Service is still urging residents to move their cars under cover, seek shelter and don't drive, walk or ride through floodwaters.
