Straight-shooting US-born West Australian Treasurer Mike Nahan has accused Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull of breaking a promise to fix the GST system that has the state being ripped off.

Last August, Mr Turnbull got a rousing reception at the WA Liberals' national get-together when he promised a major shake-up of the system that has left the state's share of GST at 30 cents in every dollar raised last year.

However he has done nothing concrete since and said during a visit that was supposed to help Premier Colin Barnett's campaign last week that a change was still years away.

The PM's appearance was deemed a negative for the Liberal's campaign for a third term.

"He didn't come good with what he has promised," Dr Nahan told Sky News.

"Politicians must learn to be straight and if you promise something, deliver. And he didn't. It's a real blow."

Last week Dr Nahan branded unions "the most hypocritical bunch of wankers I've ever seen" after a formal complaint was made about taxpayer funds being used to promote privatising Western Power, given union-basked super funds invest in such assets.
