Palaszczuk finally claims victory in Queensland: 'Who's next?'

Annastacia Palaszczuk has finally claimed victory for Labor in Queensland after an excruciating vote count, with the new government to be sworn in next week.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has finally claimed victory for Labor in Queensland, with the new government to be sworn in on Tuesday.

The premier, battling the flu, thanked voters for taking Labor from minority to majority, promising a good, consultative and decent government.

"I won't let you down," she told voters, after an excruciating count that spanned just shy of two weeks.

"I know Queenslanders had to wait for a couple of weeks. I was waiting with them.

"It is very comforting that Queenslanders have put their faith in a stable Labor majority government."

The Labor caucus will meet on Monday morning before the government is sworn in on Tuesday. The premier has refused to be drawn on who will be in her ministry, saying she'll be working on that over the weekend.
Ms Palaszczuk said she'd wished outgoing LNP leader Tim Nicholls well after he conceded defeat, but she had a stark warning about the merged party's prospects if it doesn't elect LNP Deputy Leader Deb Frecklington as its new chief.

"If the LNP does not back Deb Frecklington, I fear that the Nationals will break away from the LNP," she said of the Nanango MP, whose seat lies in the traditional National Party heartland.

"There's a lot riding on who they select."

But she also said the LNP's choice was no concern of hers.

"I've stared down Campbell Newman, I've stared down Lawrence Springborg, I've stared down Tim Nicholls. So who's next? It really doesn't worry me."

Earlier, the premier visited Governor Paul de Jersey to advise she had the numbers to form a majority government.

Labor is expected to finish with 48 seats to the LNP's 39, with three Katter Party MPs, and one representative each from the Greens and One Nation, and one independent.
