Tony Abbott has admitted he was unwise to knight Prince Philip.

The former prime minister's decision to reinstate the knights and dames in the Australian honours list was widely criticised and is likely to be overturned by Malcolm Turnbull's cabinet.

"Obviously it was an injudicious appointment," Mr Abbott told Neil Mitchell on 3AW about his Australia Day decision to bestow a knighthood on the Queen's husband.
