An Iranian refugee and former Manus Island detainee who flew from Papua New Guinea to Fiji last week will shortly apply for asylum with the support of the country's Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.
Loghman Sawari's lawyer said disillusionment with the controversial Australian-US refugee resettlement deal in part influenced his flight from PNG to Fiji.
During his three years in detention, Mr Sawari's lawyer said he was beaten, denied medical attention and when he was recognised as a refugee by PNG, moved to the mainland but was left destitute and living on the street.
