School kids will be encouraged to learn coding and computing as part of a federal government push on innovation.

Just over $50 million from the Turnbull government's new $1 billion innovation package will be spent on encouraging students to study science, maths and technology to prepare for future jobs.

"We are absolutely committed to ensuring that our students have the skills to find high-wage and rewarding jobs," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
