A Norwegian prison has defended carrying out strip searches and twice-hourly night-time checks on convicted mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik, saying it was to ensure he didn't have weapons to take hostages or commit suicide.

Mr Breivik has taken Norwegian authorities to court, accusing them of inhuman and degrading treatment that violated his human rights.

Mr Breivik was convicted of killing 77 people in 2011, and is now serving Norway's maximum sentence of 21 years, with the possibility of extensions.

Gerald Folkvord is Amnesty Norway`s expert on torture.

He spoke to Andrea Rognstrand from SBS Radio's Norwegian program.
