New research from the University of Adelaide has found that some young Asian Australians could be placing themselves at higher risk of developing skin cancer than their peers.

Dr Ashley Day, from the University's School of Psychology, says cultural norms in Asia generally suggest that it's preferable to have lighter coloured skin.

But she says some Asian Australians want darker skin - and are increasing their skin cancer risk through dangerous sun behaviour.

Dr Day discussed the findings of her research with Yuzuha Oka.
