Buckingham Palace released a statement at 9:00 pm AEST, confirming the died "peacefully" on Friday.
"It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," a statement from Buckingham Palace said.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."
The statement from Buckingham Palace said “further announcements” will be made in “due course”.
Paying his tribute to the longest-serving royal consort in the British royal family, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Duke of Edinburgh 'embodied a generation' that would never be seen again.
“Australians send our love and deepest condolences to her Majesty and all the Royal family,” the Prime Minister said in a statement issued on Friday night.
“The Commonwealth family joins together in sorrow and thanksgiving for the loss and life of Prince Philip. God bless from all here in Australia.”
