Australia’s wrestling team for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games (GC2018) has been announced.

Among the wrestlers selected include Indian-origin wrestler Rupinder Kaur Sandhu who will compete in 48kg category.

Rupinder won a Gold Medal in 48kg wrestling division in last year’s Australian National Championships held in Sydney.

She recently clinched bronze in 50kg category at the 13th commonwealth wrestling championships held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Sandhu told  that she is looking forward to win a medal at the GC2018.

“I am very optimistic to play and win in the 48kg division. I missed this opportunity at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games where I competed in 53kg division, which was not my category," she said.

Rupinder Kaur migrated to Australia ten years ago from Punjab, India. She has returned to wrestling ring after a gap of two years.

"I have a 15 months old daughter Saheb’who is also my inspiration to do better and better," said Ms Kaur.

"After Saheb’s birth, I had to take a substantial weight cut. I had a caesarean C-section delivery and I had to think twice to return to the wrestling ring as I needed a fairly significant period of time to recover and play this active sport.

“My doctor suggested that I should be careful while doing a high-impact sport within a few months of giving birth. But at the same time, he said that it is doable if I am passionate, physically strong and a bit cautious.”
