Indian-Australian cricketer Jason Sangha has joined Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in the record books after he scored his maiden first-class century against England in Townsville last week.
Braving the English bowling attack by seasoned internationals Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali in a stunning display of batting 18-year-old Sangha scored 133 off 226 balls, cobbling together a 273 runs partnership with Mathew Short.
Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar is the youngest to score a first-class ton against England. He scored an unbeaten 119 at Old Trafford in 1990 when the master blaster was 17 years and 107 days old.
Sangha, who co-captained the Australian Under-19 side earlier this year, made his first-class debut last week against England in Adelaide and didn’t take much time to bring up his maiden first-class century. He was 18 years and 71 days old when he achieved this feat playing for Cricket Australia XI.
England began the days play hoping for an innings victory over their relatively inexperienced opposition, holding a 144-run lead over Cricket Australia XI. But Sangha and Short frustrated the visitors.
He was dropped by England's Mark Stoneman on 43. Sangha was ultimately beaten by Crane on 134 while Short remained unbeaten.
While Tendulkar is the third youngest batsman to score a ton in a Test match after Bangladesh's Mohammad Ashraful and Mushtaq Mohammad of Pakistan. Sangha has become the youngest cricketer since Ricky Ponting and overall the ninth youngest Australian cricketer to notch up a first-class ton.
"I'm glad I got to make this hundred with some great guys next to me, and also be alongside Matt Short for his hundred.
"It's great fun to be out there with 'Shorty'. We've just been telling ourselves to get to the next 50 (runs), then the next 50," Sangha said.
