Icon of Punjabi film Industry leaves behind an enduring legacy

Renowned Punjabi comedian Mehar Mittal has died at 81. He is known for playing comic roles in Punjabi films and theater plays. Mittal had acted in about 200 movies and TV serials.

Mehar Mittal was born in a small village of Bathinda District of Punjab in October 24, 1935.

After graduation he worked as a teacher. Later he moved to Chandigarh to do a degree in Law where he also practiced as a Lawyer for a short span of time.

Earlier, his death report was called a hoax. Punjabi Singer Sukshinder Shinda took to the social media to pay his respects to the veteran actor at that time.

According to Darpan Magazine, he was living in Mount Abu, at the Brahma Kumari Ashram for last few years. He kept traveling between Mount Abu and Chandigarh.

At the peak of his career, Mehar Mittal was one of the most sought after actors in Punjabi film industry.  

He had many superhit Punjabi blockbusters to his cap including ‘Ucha Dar Babe Nanak Da’, ‘Long Da Lishkara’, Qurbani Jatt Di, Batwara and Mamla Garbar Hai.

During his long career in Punjabi movies, at times, he was also criticized for his sexist remarks and ‘double meaning jokes’.

At peak of his career, his presence in the films was considered to be a guarantee for the success of the films.

Mehar Mittal was also awarded for his selfless, devoted and inspiring services as a cine artist in Punjabi films by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy at the 136th Dadasaheb Phalke Jayanti in Mumbai.
Speaking at a function in Bathinda some years back he had revealed that he was paid only Rs 5 that included travelling allowance as remuneration for his first Punjabi film in 1972.
