Griffith Hospital receives 'generous' support from Sikh community

Over the past twenty years, the Griffith Sikh community has donated nearly $75,000 to Griffith Base Hospital to help purchase vital equipment for a greater medical healthcare.

Griffith’s Sikh community has donated $6,000 to the Griffith Base Hospital for the purchase of 6 special orthopaedic chairs for patients in the Hospital’s Surgical Unit.

The funds were raised during the annual Sikh Games which are held every June long weekend in Griffith. The Games are the premier sporting and cultural event for the Australian Sikh community.

"'Our community is very happy to contribute. Over the past 20 years, we estimate, we've raised more than $75,000 for equipment in the Griffith Base Hospital," said Jaswinder Singh Mavi from the Gurdwara Singh Sabha Society Griffith.

"When the Games are on, it is a great way for our community to give back to Griffith."

The official cheque handover was attended by the Hospital Business Manager Ian Wolfe, Director of Nursing Meredith Whittaker, Manjit Singh Khera, Hospital General Manager Dr Elizabeth Harford and Jaswinder Singh Mavi.

Manjit Singh Khera from Gurdwara Singh Sabha Society Griffith has thanked the local community and visitors who contributed towards the fundraiser at the annual Sikh games.

“This year’s annual Shaheedi Tournament was one of the biggest that we have seen in past. A fundraiser was also organised at the games venue to support Griffith Base Hospital," he told SBS Punjabi

The donation has been well received on the Facebook page of Murrumbidgee Local Health District.

A Griffith local, Christine Moloney appreciated the donation made by the local Sikh community.

She wrote – “Thank you Griffith Sikh Community! The generous donations and culture that you bring to Griffith each year through the Sikh games is absolutely brilliant!”

Over 15,000 people enjoyed the weekend of sports at the Shaheedi Tournament at Griffith this year.

Every June long weekend, the Sikh community hold a two-day event at Ted Scobie Oval against the backdrop of Scenic Hill in Griffith.

The annual meet is a representation of the Sikh community’s competitive spirit, an event that forms an integral part of the community’s social calendar.
